I showed that 4×4 who’s boss!

So.. the idea for these pumpkin’s has been all over Pinterest lately.. I actually saw this idea last fall and just didn’t have time to make them.. I told myself this year I would be a crafty little rockstar and get all my DIY decor projects done.  So this was one of my first projects!  Wood 4×4 ‘pumpkins’. I did have hubby’s help with sanding and chiseling the wood. I am such a girl when it comes to anything that might give me a ‘boo-boo’.. although, I did toughen up and start beating it with a hammer… then whined when my forearm hurt for two days..

After beating the crud out of the 4×4′s for almost an hour to get the ‘perfect’ look we.. ah.. hubby, sanded them and got them as smooth as possible. I slapped on some paint, burlap, jute cord, wire, buttons, and a rod thingy to make ‘stems’.. and had myself some PUMPKINS!

Photobucket

Yeah, they really are THAT cute! I made this for super cheap.. if these were in a craft store I bet they’ed be at least $100,000.. ok.. maybe more like $40ish… but still! They are tall, heavy, solid little masterpieces! Plus you get the satisfaction of this little conversation in the future..

Non-crafty friend: “Oh, my! Where on Earth did you find those adorable wood pumpkins?! I MUST go buy them!”

Says you in all your crafty awesomeness: “Wellll.. You see, I actually made them…” (The trick is to say it like it’s no big deal and you’ve been making wood pumpkins ever since you crawled outta your mama.)

Non-crafty (and now overly amazed) friend: ” NO WAY!!!! YOU made THOSE?.. Wow.. you are SOOOO talented”

Says you: “Did I mention I built this house and invented chocolate and stopped world hunger?”

LOL….

You crafty type know how us crafters roll…

Anyhow, here’s some more pics, then I will share a little ‘how to’ with ya!

That sign rocks.. don’t even try to agrue with me! lol

Photobucket

Love that yummy sanding to ‘distress’ a bit!

So, what do you think? I truly LOVE doing stuff like this and it’s been ages since I did a craft that didn’t involve paper in some way. I can’t wait to make the rest of my goodies and share them with you all!!

Now, wanna make your own? Go grab your hubby, boyfriend, partner, etc and let’s get crafty! (unless you’re all tough and stuff and can cut, chisel, and sand your own wood.. lol)

SUPPLIES:

  • A 4×4. I cut mine into 6 pieces so I could make two sets. Cut them to 21″, 16″ and 12″.
  • Orange paint. I got flat ‘pumpkin orange’ made by Glidden
  • Brown paint. I used some regular ‘ol craft paint.
  • A wood dowel. I forgot to take a photo, but you can find them at any hardware store. Mine is 1.25″ diameter. Cut to sizes 3.5″, 3″ and 2.5″
  • Green burlap (fabric.com)
  • Ivory or natural jute cord (I got mine from Etsy)
  • Large dark brown wood buttons
  • Jewelry wire, dark brown. 16 or 18 gauge. make sure it’s thick enough to stand out, but not too thick that you can’t put it through the buttons. You can get the wire at places like Hobby Lobby, Joanns, Michaels, etc.
  • Sand paper. Use a medium and fine paper.
  • Chisel
  • Paint brush, drop cloth (or a trash bag like I used, lol), hammer and hot glue.

HOW TO:

  •  1). Start buy cutting the 4×4 to the sizes I mentioned, or make them however tall and short you want! Then start sanding.. a lot. Taking a hammer to dent and scrape the wood really helps! Also use a chisel to cut in some deep creases. Sand the edges and inside the creases to smooth. The more your beat them up, the better! When you’re done taking your anger out on the 4×4′s.. use a tacky cloth or air compressor and blow off the wood.
  • 2). Set up your painting area. You can use a primer if you want, but I just did two coats of paint and it was fine! Here they are with the first coat drying:

Photobucket

You may, or may not have the help of a furry friend.. (see under my table) LOL!

  • 3). While they are drying, paint the wood dowel ‘stems’ with brown. Again, use two coats. You’ll also want to make sure they are sanded and a little beat up to go with the look of the pumpkins :)
  • 4). While the stems are drying, make some leaves and add the wire to your buttons. I used my Sizzix Big Shot to cut my leaves. You could also hand cut some, too. Cut various sizes, fray they a bit and crinkle them up in your hand.

Photobucket

5). For the wire, string pieces through your buttons and curl the ends. (Wrap them around a wooden spoon handle ,etc.)

Photobucket

6). One the pumpkins and stems are done drying, sand edges and chiseled areas to remove some of the paint and create a distressed look. Then, adhere the stems with hot glue. A big glob will works just fine! Cut some long pieces of jute cord and wrap them 1-2 times around the base of the stem to hide any messy glue, then tie into a bow. Adhere the burlap leaves behind the bow, then adhere the button.

PUMPKIN SIGN:

  • Sheet of bass wood (found at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Joanns, etc.)
  • Brown craft paint
  • Vinyl and die cutting machine OR use a good ‘ol stencil.
  • Fine sand paper
  • Poking tool (or any way to poke a small hole into the bass wood)
  • Wire (16 or 18 gauge dark brown)

HOW TO:

  • 1). Cut the bass wood to size. I cut mine to about 11″ wide. Here’s a photo from the bass wood so you know what size to look for:

Photobucket

  • 2). Sand edges to create dents and distresing.
  • 3). Cut the word ‘pumpkins’ in vinyl (or use a stencil).
  • 4). Adhere vinyl to wood.

Photobucket

5). Paint with dark brown (two coats) over the vinyl. Let dry, then peel off vinyl lettering.

Photobucket

Awesome, right? Now sand all over the sign, especially on the edges!

Photobucket

6). Next you will poke two small holes in the sign and run some wire through them, wrap around the pumpkins and you’re done! I did use some dabs of hot glue to hold the sign in place. :)

Yay! What do you think? Totally fun, right? I always get the feeling of ‘awesomeness’ when making my own decor and such. If you make some, I would LOVE to see them shared on my Facebook page!

Thanks so much for stopping by! Happy crafting!

I totally earned my ‘best mom ever’ badge today!

Summer’s coming and I have been looking around Pinterest for some ideas to keep these little monsters busy to keep the, “Moooommy, I’m booooored” to a minimum. I came across a recipe for ‘cloud dough’.. I know.. WTH is THAT?… It’s a silky smooth ‘dough’ concoction of flour and baby oil… don’t let the oil scare you away, it’s not oily at all!

Photobucket

DO THIS:

  • Get flour, baby oil, a large bowl for mixing, and a whisk. You’ll dump in 8 cup flour and 1 cup baby oil. Start mixing together with the whisk. At first I thought I’d be ‘smart’ and use my Kitchenaid mixer.. Yeeeah. Not so smart, lol. It’s kind of weird looking and doesn’t seem to mix well at first.. but once you have most the oil absorbed, dig your hands it and almost start kneading it a bit. It only takes a minute or so to get just right! Once it starts sticking together well, then you’re done!
  • I made 1 1/2 batches and dumped it all into one of those large/shallow wrapping paper containers so my kiddos would have a lot of ‘play area’. It can get messy, so if your kiddos are extra crazy, I would have them play outside with it. (Not saying my kids are NOT crazy.. they most certainly are.. I just sat there with them and watched them like a hawk, lol) They played nice and kept their hands and toys inside the container.
  • It stores very well and will last awhile! Just put the lid on the container and put it away for the next time someone says, “I’m booooored’…. or.. go tell them to clean their room if they are so ‘bored’.. lol.
  • FYI.. I was told this was ‘almost’ as fun as Disneyland.. lol.

Photobucket

I set it all up and then told them to come see.. they were quite excited! They played for over an hour. Even I liked playing it in.. it’s sooo soft.. I love it!

Photobucket

It holds together like sand does.. so it was perfect for all our sand toys!

Photobucket

They made cupcakes…

Photobucket

Photobucket

And ice cream.. Mmmm!

Witches Hat Giftbox Tutorial

As most of you know, I created a pretty cool witches hat giftbox for Echo park’s CHA summer 2011 booth! It got GREAT feedback and I figured that I would get this tutorial done for you all so you can try to make it yourselves!

It’s a lot of fun and not that much work! I made a video for the hat part since it’s easier to show in a in a video than to explain picture by picture. First, I will expalin everything else, and then add in the video for the hat at the end!

Photobucket

SUPPLIES -

  • Hot glue
  • Glue
  • Vintage crinkle ribbon. Mine is from HERE I used ‘almost black’ and ‘steel’
  • Apothecary paper kit from Echo Park Paper Co.
  • Ultra fine glitter (black and a dark grey)
  • 20G Jewelry wire in black
  • Ink in dark grey and black.
  • Black eyelets
  • Paper mache’ cone/cardboard cone at 4″ diameter.

SVG Collections needed (you can always make this without SVG’s)

SCAL/MTC basic shapes

  • Circle cut at 9″
  • 3 rectangle shapes at 1.50″h and 10.00″w

MISC.

  • Bats.. I found a FREE SVG file, however I can’t seem to find it again. Happy Hauntings cartridge has one as well!

1). Make the big boutique box. You will want to use the Square flat trio LARGEST one. Cut as sized in SCAL. (if you want to make your own box make it 11×11″ or larger.

2). The label was different on my original, but you can use the label from SVG Cuts Strawberry lane colelction. file is: label1_bottom.svg cut at 3.00w

3). 3D flower from SVG Cuts is in the ‘extras’ folder. File is: 28.svg sized in layers from 3.00w to 1.25w. Crickle and ink edges, etc.

Design Tips:

  • Add ink.. ALL OVER, lol. Inking add SO much!
  • Add the sticker from the collection kit to the hat!
  • Glitter the bats and web trims. I brushed on Mod Podge and then sprinkled away! The web was done in black and the bats were done in a dark grey. I used Recollections brand glitter which works GREAT!
  • Add eyelets and crinkle ribbon to the tag on the front. Add a name, etc. or stickers like I did!

Time for the videos! This will show you how to make the hat and assemble. Once the hat it done you just stick it onto the box!

I kept my face out of this video, so you get to stare at my sausage fingers! LOL! I’m not feeling very well, so I didn’t want to put on makeup or do my hair, lol. I had to break the video up into 3 parts, and they are each about 8mins long.

***Grrrr… for some reason the sound is ahead of the actual video. Sorry, not sure why it’s like that? I need to figure out this whole You Tube junk! or maybe it’s just me?.. It seems to lag about 15-20 seconds? ***

Video 1: You Tube link (may be better quality?) And yes, I totally give you all the finger, egh.. sorry, lol.. it was obviously an accident!

Video 2 – You Tube Link

Video 3 – You Tube Link

OK, that’s it, enjoy!! Hopefully the lagging isn’t too bad?… Any questions, just ask in a comment and I will reply in the comments for you!

“Tamara, seriously.. Create a Critter AGAIN?!”

Yup.. again.

I big pink fluffy heart LOVE them dern critters!

I had some styrofoam balls laying around and decided to do something with them. I decided to make a cute little tree for no reason at all, just for fun!

Photobucket

After I made it, I thought.. wow, that looks weird, LOL! It needs a branch or something…. and it’s pretty heavy for a ‘paper’ project because of the styrofoam and hot glue all over it. My son thinks it’s a bat! he whacked himself in the head with it! LOL!

Photobucket

The tree needed something… anything, really. It was kinda lame by itself.. I mean, it would look CUTE in my daughter’s owl themed room! Too bad the color’s don’t match. I decided to pull out the good ol’ Create a Citter and make some animals treat bags like my Springtime Buddies that I made awhile ago. I do love those little bags! I decided to go with a fall theme (Hello…..! Can we get through spring and summer first!?) I know, fall, really?… But look how cute!

Photobucket

The little fox makes me smile.. so cute!

This would be great for birthday party favors! Well, if a tree and animals fit your theme! Jungle theme? Fun stuff!

And now for more pictures.. what? Did you think you could get away with only a few photos from me? Ha! You sooo cra-zay!

Photobucket

You might have noticed that not all my critters are ‘decapitated’.. sometimes it just won’t work out for that particular die cut, so you can just adhere the bottom half of your critter to the bag.. OR, you can glue it to the back of the bag instead. For this project, only my raccoon worked.

Umm….. Yes, I have issues.. and my son asked me for a dinosaur! So.. Mr. Dino joined the Fall Friends party!

Photobucket

“Awwww.. that’s cute”…

Sure it is…. Photobucket

I know.. I know.. I couldn’t help it. That’s my dark side coming out… and it made my kids laugh!

Photobucket

Create a Critter, Straight From The Nest, and Forever Young cartridges and this file created by moi! Download 1springtime_buddies_bag_HappyLifeCraftyWife This is an SVG file. Open it and just cut away! to make this to my sizing, set this to cut at 9.630 WIDE. Make sure ‘Keep Proportions’ is checked. (If you have problems downloading it, email me with my contact link over there to the right… and I will send you the file!) Typepad download is wonky sometimes!

*** If you use my SCAL file and share anything you made with my file PLEASE link back to my blog. Do not post the file on your website/blog.. simply link back to this post. Thank ya! ***

For the tree.. get a 3″ strofoam ball and a hot glue gun! The leaves are all cut from SFTN from ‘branch 1′ cut at 2 3/4″. Cut a bunch.. I think I cut them 35 times? Glue them all over your ball, and burn your fingers while doing it.. I did it several times!

After that cut flowers from the shadow of ‘flower 5′ on FY. I cut 3 for each flower sized at 1 1/4″, 1″ and 3/4″. Layer them and fold the petals up. I made 6 of them for my tree.

The base of the tree is a rectangle rolled up and glued to the bottom. I did this before I added the leaves.

Photobucket

That’s it for the tree! Please see THIS POST on how to make the bags with animals!

Here are the sizes for the animals I used:

Fox – 3 1/2″

Owl – 3 1/2″

Squirrel – 3 3/4″

‘coon – 4″

Dinosaur – 10″

What? You don’t want to add the dinosaur? Psssh! You’re no fun! *wink*

Happy crafting!! You all might be seeing some changes to the blog soon.. I’m ready for some fun summer colors! Yay!

Toodles!

Blast off!

This weekend I told myself I would lay low and step away from the Cricut for a bit. I have so many little things laying around my house that I needed to finish, like these letters for my sons room! I bought these letters ummm… almost a year ago?! LOL! I wasn’t looking forward to painting them so I hid them in the closet. Outta sight, outta mind, right? The other day I was just randomly looking around his room thinking he needs a dresser still.. etc. and thought the walls were so plain and needed some color! (they are dark grey..) I was looking for artwork on Etsy.. and then the lightbulb went off, I remembered I had those letters hidden!

I sat down and got them done.. took over an hour.. ick.

Photobucket

Photobucket

I only got to hang up one set of letters. The other set say ‘Out of This World’ which will go above his closet or window.. which I can’t reach. That’s why I married someone tall.. yes, just to reach high places for me. I’m 5’4″ on a good day.. which isn’t crazy short.. but short enough in my family of taller women!

Anyhow.. see how cool they look! ‘Blast Off’ went right next to his rocket… he has a space themed room.. you know, in case you thought it was a jungle room or something. ‘Cause you can always find rockets in the jungle.. right?…

Photobucket

And throwing a quick one of my little dude in here. Shirt off and all lounging around.. He stole my iPhone to play a game when I wasn’t looking.

Photobucket

And no.. that’s not a wet spot on the arm of the chair. Weird.. the light must have hit the fabric funky.

So.. earlier in my post I said I was trying to stay away from the Cricut.. yeah, didn’t happen. I made this cute shirt for my daughter, Alannah!

Photobucket

… and now I want one! And then I want to add ‘juicy’ to the butt of all my sweat and jammie pants.

Yes.. I am serious…

.

.

.

.

.

.

.. seriously kidding.. but does it make me weird that I had that thought in my head for a second? I am very random.

Yeah.

TTYAL,MITNFDOSJBIASBATW!….

That is short for.. ‘I will talk to you all later, maybe in the next few days or so.. just because I am super busy all this week!’

*waves*

Be ‘Merry’ with these cute Christmas blocks!

I love these! This was my first time using Mod Podge and I am loving it! I can already see myself trying to Mod Podge everything, LOL! Hubby cut these blocks for me and they are a little bit too big. These are 3.5×4″ and I think I will stick to 3×3 and 2×2 for larger words/sayings.

I am making some more tomorrow!

I know I posted earlier.. but the cute paper set is from My Mind’s Eye Love them!!
